This Mi’kmaw History Month, Watch Our Stories Come to Life

Truro, Nova Scotia: The Mi’kmaw History Month (MHM) Committee is proud to announce the theme of the 2025 Mi’kmaw History Month poster: A’tukwemk aq A’tukowinu’k – Storytelling and Storytellers.

This year’s theme honours the distinctive and descriptive stories of Mi’kmaw people—stories shaped by the land and waters, rooted in Mi’kma’kik, and passed down through generations. They are not only ways of remembering, but of connecting—to each other, to our ancestors, and to Mi’kmaw knowledge systems that continue to grow and guide us.

“Mi’kmaw stories carry laughter, teaching, and truth. When they’re told, something bigger than the story comes to life,” said Tim Bernard, Executive Director of Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre and Chair of the MHM Committee. “They are how we know what we know, and they connect us to where we come from.”

The 2025 poster, created by the team at Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre, will explore oral tradition as a living record of Mi’kmaw science, history, identity, and values. Storytelling remains central to how Mi’kmaw people teach, learn, and live well in Mi’kma’kik.

Mi’kmaw History Month is an opportunity to educate and celebrate. This year’s theme invites everyone to listen closely and reflect on how stories continue to carry Mi’kmaw knowledge and truth into the future.

The poster will be printed in Mi’kmaw, English, and French and distributed to schools across the province. A downloadable version will also be available at mikmaqhistorymonth.ca.

“This year marks our 10th year administering the Mi’kmaw Community Activity Program,” commented Bernard. “With the generous support of the Support4Culture program, we’re proud to have contributed over $200,000 toward community-led programs that strengthen Mi’kmaw culture, language, and wellness.”

The Mi’kmaw Community Activity Program (MCAP) is now open for applications. Mi’kmaw organizations and communities across the province are encouraged to apply for funding to support cultural, recreational, and educational initiatives. Applications will be accepted until August 6, 2025.
