SUMMARY:Tuesday Night Talk\, free at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic
DESCRIPTION:Mi’kmaw artists are creating a wide range of imaginative and beautiful work using the skills and traditions of basketry weaving given to them by their elders and ancestors. \nPeter J Clair is one of nine artists presented in The Art of Mi’kmaw Basketry (FORMAC publishing)\, which was released in 2023. \nPeter was among the first to break new ground in the 1980s when public interest was rising in Indigenous contemporary art. As a master sculptural weaver he uses natural materials to create thought-provoking pieces using traditional and contemporary forms. He often uses Black Ash\, willow and other tree barks. \nPeter is also a poet and fiction writer. As our guest speaker\, he will present in English\, with occasional commentary in Mi’kmaw.

SUMMARY:Wagmatcook Elders Gathering- Speakers series - Waltis World Champion Feature
DESCRIPTION:A Presentation from the World Walter 2024 Champion\, The Display of the winning Waltes Games\, and Presentation of Appreciation plaque from Chief and Council and Director of Community Culture & Heritage. \nThe Game of Waltes. Waites\, also called woltestakun or altestakun is a kind of dice gamethought to be of pre-Columbian origin. It is played on a circular wooden dish (usually of rock maple) about twelve inches in diameter\, hollowed to three-quarters of an inch at its centre. There are six dice made of caribou bone with flat faces and rounded sides; one face being plain\, and the others bearing a dotted cross. When all the marked or all the unmarked faces are turned up there is a count of five points. If five marked faces and one unmarked face or five unmarked faces and one marked face are turned up one point is given\, and if a die falls off the dish there is no count. \nThis Year at the World Waltes championships the winner was Molly Pierro\, whom was undefeated during the Millbrook Millbrook Waltes on July 12th• 2024. Pierro played a total of six games at the championship and won each of them\, earning her first place\, a champion medallion\, and a handmade Waltes bowl made by Chad Denny.
