SUMMARY:6th Annual Wagmatcook Aboriginal Arts & Culture Festival
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nFestival & Events Schedule \nFriday\, October 14th\, 2016 \nMi’kmaw Cultural Celebration Day #2 \n10:00 am – 2:00 pm (Great Hall & Downstairs) \nMuch like Thursday\, today’s celebrations will have the same setup as Thursday’s session just to give other participants (schools/individuals) a chance to take in our presentations. This day will also include a bonus 3 additional presentations as workshops that will be held downstairs of the Wagmatcook Centre. These will be done by Dan Paul (from Membertou) on the Traditional History of the Mi’kmaw\, Josephine Peck (Wagmatcook) – Mi’kmaw Language Workshop and Joel Denny (Eskasoni) – Traditional Stories of the Mi’kmaw people. Last year’s presentations were very well received! There will also be a break during lunch. \n*** LUNCH from 12:00 pm – 12:30 pm *** \n9:00 am – 5:00 pm \nAboriginal Art Exhibit (Wagmatcook Centre – Downstairs) \n7:00 pm – 9:00 pm \n  \nThe Peter Frank Bernard Aboriginal Music Project Show/Concert is scheduled for Friday\, October 14th from 7:00pm – 9:30pm. \nWe will be performing live versions of his songs at the opening and then the full repertoire of his 1979 Album “Souriquois Visions” on Friday evening\, which will be 14 & Up.  Everyone is welcome.  Free admission (Donations will be accepted at the door).  Limited seating (about 160-180).  For tickets\, please call the Wagmatcook Centre at 902-295-2999.  Thank you!! \n***SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT*** This year we have been working very hard on a very special project that will highlight the work and musical genious of the late Peter Frank Bernard of Wagmatcook.  After releasing an album of his folk songs in 1979 he tragically died in a house fire in 1981 with plans to release another album later that year.  Through the support of his family and the community we have organized 5 local Aboriginal musicians that have worked together with the very well known musician and composer Mr. Scott Macmillan to learn his songs and play them for everyone as a live concert during the opening ceremonies on the morning of October 11th as well as a full concert on the closing ceremonies on the evening of October 14 with a full dinner show from 7:00pm – 9:30pm.  We ask you to spread the word and please inquire for more information \nTo view the video promo of our upcoming event\, please view the following link:  https://vimeo.com/184713983 \nAs part of this music legacy project we have secured 5 local Mikmaw musicians that will be learning Peter Frank’s songs from his 1979 album\, Souriquois Visions. With tremendous support from family we have worked on this project since January 2016 and this live concert is dedicated to this man’s wonderful music. His songs ring through the challenges and plights of the Aboriginal people of the 1970’s and how the Indian Act\, governments and bureaucracy have impeded and destroyed cultural growth and protection of traditional knowledge of our people\, history\, songs\, dances and more. It will be a great evening for all to share and join in on!! \n9:30 pm \nCLOSING CEREMONIES / THANK YOU \n

SUMMARY:Special Tour at Partridge Island
DESCRIPTION:Nova Scotians of all ages can learn about Mi’kmaq legends during a special talk and then join a beach walk at Partridge Island\, a significant historical\, cultural and geological site. \nThe tour\, led by Gerald Gloade\, program development officer at the Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre\, takes place on Saturday\, Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.\, starting at the Fundy Geological Museum\, 162 Two Islands Rd.\, Parrsboro. \n“Coming from a culture where traditional and ecological knowledge was embedded in story form and passed down from one generation to the next\, it’s important to look to the places mentioned in the stories\,” said Mr. Gloade. “In and around Partridge Island\, we have eight different legends of Kluscap that tell us this area was very significant to our ancestors\, and being full of culturally significant materials\, it can even be said to be sacred.” \nMr. Gloade is a talented artist and educator who has devoted years to researching and sharing information about the geological connections and sites related to the Mi’kmaq legends and cultural history. He will share the legends of Kluskap and the traditional and ecological knowledge of Mi’kma’ki\, the land of the Mi’kmaq. This special tour will include a visit to the famous bubbling tides that occur in the area. \n“The talk and beach walk by Gerald Gloade is an exciting opportunity for people to learn more about and experience the rich cultural history associated with the important geological sites on the Parrsboro Shore\,” said Tim Fedak\, director/curator at the Fundy Geological Museum. \nThe cost is $15 per person and children under 12 are free if accompanied by an adult. Spaces are limited. To register\, contact the museum at 902-254-3814. Sturdy shoes are recommended. \nAfter Mr. Gloade gives a short presentation at the museum\, participants are responsible for driving five kilometres to Partridge Island. \nFor more information\, visit http://fundygeological.novascotia.ca/events.
