SUMMARY:Prismatic Arts Festival presents Cris Derksen~Orchestral Powwow
DESCRIPTION:Cris Derksen\nSeptember 17 | 7:00pm | Rebecca Cohn Auditorium\n$15-$20\nIn a world where almost everything — people\, music\, cultures — get labelled and slotted into simple categories\, Cris Derksen represents a challenge. Originally from Northern Alberta she comes from a line of chiefs from North Tall Cree Reserve on her father’s side and a line of strong Mennonite homesteaders on her mother’s. She’s a classically trained cellist and composer whose music braids the traditional and contemporary. Derksen weaves her classical background and her Indigenous ancestry together with new school electronics to create genre-defying music.\n \nSo — she is kind of in a category all her own.\n \nFor her third studio album\, Orchestral Powwow\, Cris paired up with Tribal Spirit music\, traveled\, researched\, worked and collaborated with powwow groups to create a cinematically symphonic and truly Indigenous album. In her words “What excites me most about this project is bringing our Indigenous music to the center of the European model and we as Indigenous artists lead the way with our drums and our heart beat to create new forms of music.” She expresses the intersections between the old and the new. The album was nominated for 2016 Instrumental Juno album of the year. \n \nThis is a singular artist creating music that challenges\, enlightens and it’s uniquely powerful. Cris is thrilled to be back at Prismatic for the second year in a row.  \n  \nBox office phone number: (902) 494-3820 | 1.800.874.1669

SUMMARY:Special Tour at Partridge Island
DESCRIPTION:Nova Scotians of all ages can learn about Mi’kmaq legends during a special talk and then join a beach walk at Partridge Island\, a significant historical\, cultural and geological site. \nThe tour\, led by Gerald Gloade\, program development officer at the Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre\, takes place on Saturday\, Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.\, starting at the Fundy Geological Museum\, 162 Two Islands Rd.\, Parrsboro. \n“Coming from a culture where traditional and ecological knowledge was embedded in story form and passed down from one generation to the next\, it’s important to look to the places mentioned in the stories\,” said Mr. Gloade. “In and around Partridge Island\, we have eight different legends of Kluscap that tell us this area was very significant to our ancestors\, and being full of culturally significant materials\, it can even be said to be sacred.” \nMr. Gloade is a talented artist and educator who has devoted years to researching and sharing information about the geological connections and sites related to the Mi’kmaq legends and cultural history. He will share the legends of Kluskap and the traditional and ecological knowledge of Mi’kma’ki\, the land of the Mi’kmaq. This special tour will include a visit to the famous bubbling tides that occur in the area. \n“The talk and beach walk by Gerald Gloade is an exciting opportunity for people to learn more about and experience the rich cultural history associated with the important geological sites on the Parrsboro Shore\,” said Tim Fedak\, director/curator at the Fundy Geological Museum. \nThe cost is $15 per person and children under 12 are free if accompanied by an adult. Spaces are limited. To register\, contact the museum at 902-254-3814. Sturdy shoes are recommended. \nAfter Mr. Gloade gives a short presentation at the museum\, participants are responsible for driving five kilometres to Partridge Island. \nFor more information\, visit http://fundygeological.novascotia.ca/events.
