SUMMARY:Ash Working Basket Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In Celebration of Mi’kmaq History Month\, the Millbrook Culture and Heritage Centre with the support of The Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq through the Province of Nova Scotia-Department of Communities\, Culture and Heritage and Support4Culture\, are able to have a 2 day Ash Working Basket Workshop.  The Instructor is Rebecca Labillois from Eel River Bar First Nations.  Rebecca has been doing basketry for about 30 years.  Her grandfather James Pictou passed this knowledge down to his daughter who then passed it down to Rebecca. \nRebecca still holds a lot of here grandfathers tools that he had used to make his baskets and uses them to make hers. \nThe basket course is only open to intermediate basket makers\, so beginners can not attend this one at this time. \n\nThe date of the workshop is October 14th & 15th\, 2017.\nStarting at 9:00am and ending at 5:00pm.\nThe baskets that you will be making are a Hamper and a square handle basket.\nMaterials will be provided.\n15 participants at Max.\n\nIf you would like to take this course\, please phone Heather Stevens at 902-843-3496 or email at heather@millbrookheritagecentre.ca \nDeadline to Register is October 6th at 4:30pm

Oct. 15\, 3:00pm)\nAs part of the 25th anniversary of King’s Film Society\, we’re delighted to partner with ARCAC for an afternoon featuring special guest speakers and historical films that explore First Nation’s culture in our region. \nPlease join us at ArtsPlace (2nd floor) where we’ll screen two NFB archival documentaries (early 1990s) by award-winning Mi’kmaq filmmaker Catherine Anne Martin. In between the films\, artists Judy Pearson and her son Robbie McEwan of Bear River First Nation\, will join us to discuss the cultural and spiritual aspects of their artwork and the process and significance that goes into creating their beautiful and detailed quillwork (Robbie) and rock paintings (Judy). \n3:00 pm: Film: Kwa’nu’te’: Mi’kmaq and Maliseet Artists (42 min)\nThis film profiles a number of Mi’kmaq and Maliseet artists from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick\, showing their similarities and differences\, samples of their work and the sources of their inspiration.
