DESCRIPTION:October is Mi’kmaq History Month in Nova Scotia. The goal of the month is to help Nova Scotians build awareness of Mi’kmaq history and heritage\, and to increase understanding of the province’s rich Mi’kmaq culture. Treaty Day\, (October 1st) marks the beginning of Mi’kmaq History Month in Nova Scotia\, and is followed by a number events hosted throughout the province\, including some at CBU/Unama’ki College. DESCRIPTION:The Millbrook Cultural & Heritage Centre are pleased to announce that we will be having a Speakers Series during the Month of October to celebrate Mi’kmaq History Month.  This week we invite you to come and listen to Stephen J. Augustine.  So please come out and join us for a fun filled evening. See attached poster for more upcoming Speaker Series events: mikmaq-history-month-speaker-series-poster \n \nPresenter Bio: \nSTEPHEN J. AUGUSTINE – October 26\, 2016 from 6-8 pm \nHereditary Chief Mi’Kmaq Grand Council \nDean Unama’ki College and Aboriginal Learning at Cape Breton University\, Nova Scotia \nUntil January 2013 Stephen Augustine was the Curator of Ethnology for Eastern Maritimes\, in the Ethnology Services Division of the Canadian Museum of Civilization (since 1996)\, in Gatineau/Ottawa for sixteen years. He holds a Masters degree in Canadian Studies from Carleton University (Ottawa) focussing on traditional knowledge curriculum development in the context of the education system. He obtained a B.A in Anthropology and Political Science from St Thomas University (N.B) in 1986. \nOver the years\, Mr. Augustine has shared his expertise in research and traditional knowledge with many organizations\, including government departments\, the Assembly of First Nations\, and various Aboriginal communities across Canada. He is part of an advisory panel on biodiversity issues and has worked extensively with the United Nations programs on development and the environment. He has been teaching for eight years a sessional course at Carleton University (course: Aboriginal Peoples and the Knowledge Economy). He has been invited as guest speaker at national and international conferences. He has published papers\, been recorded for radio programs and various video programs on traditional knowledge\, Maritimes history and treaties\, and storytelling. He has organized cross-cultural workshops and made presentations to a wide variety of institutions (U.N.\, federal and provincial departments\, universities\, museums\, UNESCO and The Vatican). His book on the CMC collections (Mi’kmaq & Maliseet Cultural Ancestral Material\, Mercury Series\, CMC\, 2005) has proven a valuable resource for academic researchers and educators alike
